Teen Advisory Board (TAB)

Meeting Notes - Friday, September 4th, 2009

In Attendance: IG, JV

  1. Summer Reading Recap: Talked about the past Summer Reading Program.

  2. Teen Read Week is coming up and will be October 18th - 24th. The theme is "Read Beyond Reality." Those in attendance felt something tying together Harry Potter and the Twilight series would be most appropriate - and concluded that another Mystery Party with a Supernatural Theme would work well. The time is TBA - Fridays are the best day, but Eva is concerned that the Friday of TRW will conflict with the WHS homecoming.

  3. Outreach: Eva asked how we as a library can do better outreach to students in Jr.High and High School. Suggestions were to have more contests, advertise in the paper/on the web, and work more with the local schools.

  4. Atmosphere in the Teen Space: Eva asked how the library can do a better job of creating a more respectful Teen Space. Those in attendance have decided to think about it and bring ideas to the next meeting and were very sad to learn that one of the comfy chairs was marked with graffiti.

  5. The Budget & the Fundraiser: Those in attendance still would like to do a fall fundraiser, hopefully in November. Various ideas were revisited - including the candy sales fundraiser. Those in attendance were concerned about the start-up money for that - Eva mentioned that the Friends of the Library might be able to help with that. There were also concerns that "Everyone else is already doing that." New idea: Book Auction for signed books.

  6. Teen Volunteer Program: Eva ran various ideas by those present for a proposal she is working on to have a Teen Volunteer program that meets regularly. There has been high demand by students in the area for a way to do community hours - a good program would allow for this to be done. The favorite idea of those in attendance was to do computer tutors - there would be a set time for students to come and use a library laptop and teach an adult (or anyone) how to use the computer. Students would have to be computer savvy to volunteer for this program and do their community hours.

  7. Meditation Workshop? Those present liked the idea very much - but were concerned about reaching those who would want to come to the event. This lead to a brief discussion on advertising.

  8. Book Picks: Those in attendance marked books they thought the library should purchase.

Next Meeting is Friday, October 2nd, 2009 at 4:00pm at the Main Library!
